Mark Berends is a professor of sociology and director of the Center for Research on Educational Opportunity at the University of Notre Dame. His research focuses on how school organization and classroom instruction are related to student outcomes, with special attention to disadvantaged students and school reforms aimed at improving their educational opportunities. 
Mark’s first trip to Haiti was in 2014 with Andrew Elliot and Daniel Edwards to meet with the people of H.O.P.E. and others in the Borgne community.  He was captivated by the mission of H.O.P.E. and is committed to working with community members to further students’ and teachers’ educational opportunities in Borgne. He and his wife Ann live in South Bend, IN, and they have three children who are living in Nashville, TN.





Daniel Edwards, Ph.D.

Daniel (Dan) Edwards is the President of Evidence-Based Associates (EBA), a technical assistance and management consulting firm that focuses on the high-impact implementation of evidence-based programs for vulnerable children and families. Daniel works with county and state governing bodies, aiding their adoption of evidence-based policies, programs, and practices. Prior to joining EBA, he was Clinical Professor at the Medical University of South Carolina and Vice-President of Multi-Systemic Therapy (MST) Services. 

 

Daniel first traveled to Haiti in 2002 with Andrew Elliot and their sons as part of a team visiting Port-au-Prince. He has returned to Haiti several times, each focused on building relationships with and supporting Haitian people working on community-based projects. He believes in sustainable partnerships with local community members and is focused on the Educational component of HOPE’s vision for Borgne. He and his wife live in Arlington, VA, where they enjoy raising their kids, two dogs, a cat, and about 10,000 bees.

 



           

Andrew Elliot

Andrew (Andy) Elliot is professor of psychology and the University of Rochester. He conducts research on achievement motivation, and teaches courses in educational, personality, and social psychology. In 2015 he brought seven of his students to Borgne for a week as part of a course entitled “Achievement and motivation in developing countries”.

 

Andrew has worked on various projects in Haiti since 2005, and has worked with H.O.P.E. since 2013. He is a firm believer in H.O.P.E’s grass-roots, collaboration-based approach to development, and is working with his long term friends Daniel Edwards and Mark Berends on several education projects in the greater Borgne community. He lives in Rochester, NY, with his wife, Juli, with whom he has three children who have “left the nest”.
