Dental Clinic

For thousands of Borgne residents there is now access to professional dentistry and preventive care.  The ASB (Borgne Medical Alliance) dental clinic opened in 2012 and is staffed by a full-time dentist, Dr. Ruthza, plus an intern; and we have several in-service dental visits from U.S. volunteer dentists.  This past year the clinic was upgraded with digital x-ray technology; and began doing root-canal work through Dr. Ruthza.

As the clinic’s founder, Dr. Steve Burgart (Dokte Steve) would say, “most people in Borgne generally have mostly good teeth, and one or two very bad ones’.  This is symptomatic of a community that had basically no access to professional dentistry to provide preventive care or early treatment of dental problems (cavities and disease).

Our community peasant leader, Ben, models the wonderful work being done at the clinic

Ben is one of H.O.P.E.’s first employees; and now a key leader in ASB’s mobile and community health programs.

His deteriorated dental situation was very typical of the dental care in the community prior to the clinic's opening. In Ben’s case he did have more than a couple of bad teeth – in fact most of them were pretty bad.

So, his new smile is a major restoration and he shows it off every time you see him!

The cost of a dental visit is under $3.00, but for many this is prohibitive. In keeping with ASB’s ethic, nobody in urgent need is turned away due to lack of ability to pay.  Dokte Steve is already preparing to equip a second dental room; with your support, we will be able to expand and offer more treatments at a lower cost.

We thank Dr. Steve Burgart for all that he has done to take on this project and ensure that Borgne has professional dental care.  Ben is one of many smiling patients!
